Mexico Holiday

Pattern #23

Description

This pattern is a modern update of a jacket that has become a vintage favorite for collectors. Many of you will remember the souvenir jackets made in Mexico from the late 1940s through early 1950s. Many had a Mexican boy and girl dancing on back and were finished with cross stitching. Now you can make your own!

This pattern is just like the original design. It has the same shirt collar, rounded patch pockets, dart at front shoulders, and set-in sleeves with pleat at sleeve cap, just like the original. However, this time I have added 2 inches more room in arm holes for wearing comfort. I also added several more inches to the hem length and have cut the body into an A-line, adding relaxed movement. I include over a dozen original appliqués (including the dancing boy and girl) and instructions for cross stitch hem finishing.

For those of you who don’t want the original design, I have included a more contemporary version. This option gives you the same jacket design, but I have added a front and back yoke facing and side vents for more hem movement. This gives you a soft "garden" or "artist" style swing jacket that is casual, relaxed, and feminine.

You also have the option to eliminate the appliqués and finish with a front facing for a more contemporary look. It is quick to sew and a joy to wear.

Sizing

This pattern is designed for 6" – 10" of wearing ease. Small ladies will check shoulder width and make minor adjustments. The rest of the fitting will be done in the side seams at your "on-the-body" fitting before you sew up the side seams. This pattern sizes from small to XXLarge.

Fabric Suggestions

The original Mexican jackets were made of wool broadcloth or felt. For the more contemporary version I personally like washed linens, but any fabric with that type of weight and drape works well.
