Audubon Park

Pattern #14

Description

A Jacob’s coat — Southern style. Think about all the small pieces you have in your scrap bag and the fun of piecing together an assortment of colors or textures. I give you VERY EASY instructions to strip-piece these together to make a large piece of material big enough to cut this jacket. The next time you make it, use only one fabric and you will get a completely different look.

The jacket is long in back and shorter in front, with a large pleat in the back to ensure nice movement. The flat collar band completes the design. Hem lengths can be adjusted for your personal needs, and sleeves can be shortened.

Note: If you are going to piece together fabric for your yardage you will need a piece that is a
total of 2 to 2-1/2 yards. You can save a little fabric if you shorten the hem. Larger sizes may require
more fabric. Check cutting layout to help calculate yardage needs.

Sizing

Because this pattern has no set-in sleeves, it is very easy to make sizing adjustments. Sew the shoulder seams, do your "on the body" fitting, mark where needed and sew up the side seams!

The design sizes from small to XXLarge. Excellent for plus sizing.

Fabric Suggestions

Choose fabric that has soft to medium drape. This design needs to move. Pick fabric with a tight weave; avoid ones with loose weaves and a lot of stretch.

When strip-piecing, pick fabrics that are related in weight and drape. One of the most striking jackets I made was from black silk velveteen — very elegant. I have two personal favorites: one is made from white linen, has short sleeves, and is cut short with the hemline even all around. The other is white shirtweight rayon cut a little shorter than the pattern.
