SUMMER NEWS – Site is under construction !!!!
I had great plans to update my site this summer. I started lessons on how to use WordPress & was very excited. I think I can actually learn this.
Then…I fell off a ladder & broke my leg.
No one over 60 should be allowed to get a ladder. When you fall off (& sooner or later you will) the chances are you will brake something……………and it is going to HURT LIKE HELL!!!!!! Then you going to realize it is going to take MONTHS before you can get back to life as you knew it. My house & yard are not all on one level so I have been confined to the bedroom, kitchen, bath & living room. There is not enough TV, old movies or books that will keep you from going nuts. I have re-done my all address books (some of the names & address go back to when I was room mother for my kits – they are now in there 40’s) & I have dug out all the boxes of old pictures that I never got around to putting in albums. It is funny how you start with the first child & take lots of pictures & start a nice album then the 2nd one comes along & best layed plans go out the window. After all these years I can’t remember who, when & where half these people are or where they were taken or even who’s relatives some of these people are. I can’t get to my studio & I am so depressed! I finely broke down & went to the head doctor….I now have “happy” pills that should start working in a couple of weeks. She assured me this is not unusual & that in a month or so I will be back to my old self. I am hoping I will also be a little thinner & in better shape health wise.
For those of you who would like to order patterns….you still can…just not through the web site at this time. You can call me (619-269-9808) or order by mail (Mary Lou Rankin – 5408 Barclay Avenue, San Diego, CA 92120).
I am still selling patterns, teaching/workshops, & making wearable art clothing for art shows. If you have any questions please call. Thanks for your continued interest.
Well so much for “I’m going to blog every week plan”. At my last post I was getting ready to do 2 art shows here in San Diego County. As usual I was behing on finishing up new things for the events. I had been working on my “computer lessens”….& when I am doing that I can’t think of anything else. I have discovered I have a very narrow one-track mind. With the show dates coming up VERY fast I moved into the studio & started sewing. I did finish all the neck tie vest I had planned & they came out great. I then moved on to more individual garment designs. I managed to finish several “big white bloses” using my new design. The whole thing is made from a large circle. If you like something “BIG & COMFORTABLE” to wear over something small & skinny then this is the blouse for you. It is a fun sewing project & I plan on offering a class on making this. When I moved on to the other garments things got a little more frenetic…moving into highten frenzy!!!
Most of the time I can look at a piece of fabric & a dozen ideas jump into my mind & away I go. Then there are those times when it is like the creative light bulb in my head has burned out! The closer to my deadline the darker my light bulb got. I finely finished MOST of the things I had planned….but it was NOT easy.
The lst show was on May 5th. It was a 1 day show…my 3rd for this group…Talmadge Art Show here in San Diego held at Libery Station. I keep doing better each time I do this one & plan on doing it again in November. The 2nd show was on May 11 & 12th….ONE WEEK LATER…what was I thinking! This was the Barnardo Winery Art Show in out North county here in San Diego. I had never done this one before & was looking forward to a great week-end. To begin with – this is a lovely place to go – have lunch, sample some wine, stroll the grounds…..& I am sure in the past & again in the future it is a wonderful place to hold an art show….JUST NOT THAT week-end! On Saturday it was in the high 90’s & on Sunday it moved up to the 100’s! I thought I was going to die…. The people there didn’t want to shop in that heat & no amount of wine was going to change their mind! The winery has another art show in the fall & the other artists said that one is always well attended. I will probably try one more time….I have a short memory & my sun burn will be all gone by then.
Whow….just finished another computer class! I have been sewing like crazy for 2 art shows that are coming up next month so I haven’t had time to do much with my web site. The older I get…the slower I get AND I find I can no longer do more than one thing at a time. The good news is I didn’t forget everything I learned from the last lesson. Things are starting to fall into place….very slowly, but that is OK. I do find it is very frustrating that I can’t move & format text & pictures around like I can when I am working with “pages”. I want things to be like I want & this silly site has other ideas. It seems my website is OLD & when it was set up things were more complicated & therefore the changes have to be done in the OLD way…..& THAT WAY IS NOT EASY! We are changing what can be changed into WordPress….so easy to work with. The other stuff that can’t be changed will take me longer to learn. This will include the catalog pages. I can’t wait to get those up-dated! In the mean time keep watching. I will add dates to the calendar in a couple of days. No class dates yet, but I do have dates for the art shows for the year.
03-22-13 -I just had another computer lessen. As you can see the topic headers are still not on the site.
Because of this the rest of the site can not be viewed. I have a call into my web master regarding getting these back. I thought I had deleted these, but it seems that was done from “highter up” when they made a little change to the shopping site. Once these are back & I can get to the other pages I will be back on track. This week I am going to work on putting pictures & drawings into my “media” file so when I can add new text again I will also be able to add more pictures. What a Journey this all has become! My next lessen is Monday & hopefully my web lady will have called & everything is back up for viewing.
Another reminder – If you want to order a pattern & can’t get to the shopping cart give me a call (619-269-9808) & I can take your order over the phone OR you can send a check & order through the mail.
That service seems to be working just fine. That may be “old school” but those guys come by every day without a breakdown, glitch or complaint. I know computers are fast & technology is the answer to everything, but there is something nice about writing out something on a piece of paper, putting it into an envelope, adding a stamp & giving it to the mail man….a real person….to be delivered to another real person.
03-06-13 -Am I the only person who jumps into a project with great enthusiusm only to realize half way into the venture that you really should have thought things out before you began? My web site has needed a great deal of work for a long time. After MUCH discussion & hours of trying to understand the concept of how web sites work my poor son through up his hands & said “Mom I give up” & then he moved to Idaho. He is very patient – I should say VERY VERY PATIENT, but I worn him down.
Well….I am now on my own & I have finished my 1st computer lessen. I found out my site is in WordPress & it is very easy to work with & I should be able to do most of the work myself. My lst lessen went well & I began to feel that there was hope for me after all. I went over my notes & started making the corrections I wanted. As you can see I need MORE LESSENS. I have now lost everything….or at least hidden everything so it can’t be seen, however, there is hope…my next 2 lessens are next week! Keep checking to see how I am doing.
Also if you want to order patterns you can still do so. Unfortunately you can’t get to the shopping cart to order through PayPal, but you can call me (619-269-9808) & order over the phone. If you want to order with a check call me & I will give you the new mailing address.
Thanks to everyone for your support.
How many times have you said “I want to get back to sewing again” but I just don’t know where to start? Talk to your friends, get together with a group or sneak out all by yourself and come spend time with MARY LOU RANKIN.
I am often asked when & where am I going to be teaching. I am no longer going to be doing as much “long distance trade show traveling” so I now have time to get back to teaching. Aside from “sewing” this is my favorite thing to do. The first of my classes will be at Paradise Sewing in Poway here in San Diego county. For info call Jinny Hoffmann at 619-858-9808 or 760-745-4140 or email them at firstname.lastname@example.org and let them know what type of classes you would most like them to offer.
I will have detailed descriptions posted as soon as I can work my way down this new road of knowledge….for me it is more like Mr. Toads wild ride.
Also where would you like to see classes held? I am looking for more locations.
Well here I go….I hope this works! I have finely “some what” mastered my pages program and can make boxes and pick up pictures and drop into the boxes and move things around and things look prety good….BUT this is a whole new ball game. I really didn’t get the “tec” gene!
